Trying to fix corruption is hard enough, but when your leader can do whatever he wants for five years and only was elected by a small fraction of a nations citizens… it makes people want to lash out. That’s where our story begins.
First a bit of background: If you follow international politics you may know that Canada just held election 41 (I have a post in the queue about it), where an amazing set of events happened to allow one of the two major parties to lose most of their seats, and the other party to become a majority. The problem is that (according to Environics Research for the Council of Canadians) 62% of Canadians have been asking for proportional representation. Had we had a PR system the odds are slim that the conservatives would have a majority (depending on the system used).
So today a senate page, Brigette DePape, decided to take it upon herself to tell Canada that it needs to stop Steven Harper (who hates the Internet). Of course, good on her for doing this… she is a fighter and this is the kind of stuff I was talking about before. In our war against those who oppress us, its important that we take risks and stand up for what we believe in. Brigette lost her job and she put herself at risk legally through any sort of “secret laws” that apparently can be passed. Luckily she didn’t live in the United States or they may have sent her away to GitMo for the rest of her life without any form of trial for being a terrorist.
“Harper’s agenda is disastrous for this country and for my generation,” DePape said in the release. “We have to stop him from wasting billions on fighter jets, military bases, and corporate tax cuts while cutting social programs and destroying the climate. Most people in this country know what we need are green jobs, better medicare, and a healthy environment for future generations.”
DePape, we all know that Harper will never do these things. He likes the idea of Americanization for Canada too much, such as allowing them to manage our boarders. Oil is of course big for Harper, he gets elected in Alberta, green jobs mean less oil jobs in Alberta and those Albertans love their oil. We will be lucky if we even get proportional representation by the next election, let alone a “Green Future”. I will close with a great quote that I think fits Miss DePape wonderfully:

Rick, do you think you could put the name of the author somewhere close to the heading of each article? I tend to assume that articles posted here are written by you, which makes it confusing when another author uses pronouns like “I” and “we”. Once I figure out that it’s someone else talking I need to scroll down to check who it is, and then start over and read the article from the beginning in this new context to understand it correctly.
The presentation of the author can remain below the article where it is now, but I think the name should also be visible at the top.
I will start labeling my posts better as guest posts for you guys. It can’t be at the very top because that’s whats used as the summary of the article. I will figure a good method out. 🙂

Yes, a two party system based on majority elections is an inferior form of democracy. It needs to be replaced with a multi-part system based on proportional representation. Voter choice is a good thing and if you only have two parties to vote for your power to kick out corrupt politicians is reduced.
It’s very easy to see how corrupt it is when you look at the United States. At least in Canada there is a chance for other parties to come into power… but its rare. In the United States the system breeds a two party system.
If you wish to get rid of the secret governments in N America, you need to wake people up. Tell people what really happened during 9/11.

Yes, her position was a staunchly brave one, but ultimately futile 🙁
IMO, it would have been better had she maintained her position and then have it used to leak out any info on corruption regarding any elected officials that came into question, to possibly wikileaks or any other independent whistleblowers.
Yes, her job (and possibly her life) would have still have been in danger, but at least then she would have made a REAL difference as opposed to just getting fired and promptly removed from media spotlight.
The success-rate of any protest or social upheaval is strictly proportional to the number of people participating.
